Chapter 26. Max

The reprieve that had Max’s life close to normal was short-lived. She could feel down to her core how wrong it had been to drop the no-contact order. She was berating herself for being swayed. She had always been hyper-independent. She was so good at walling it off she didn’t think it bothered her anymore. Now she felt more vulnerable than she had before. Backing down made her feel as though she had conceded a battle, a battle that she was finally getting the upper hand on. She blinked away her angry tears and pulled her hair back. It was a new week, and she needed to put the previous week behind her. Build that wall and push it out of her mind. The Flower Shop would have enough distractions to keep her mind busy. She hoped.

Max arrived at the shop early. She felt the need to shake up her routine. She hoped it might make it harder for Brad to keep tabs on her. It also created an inner chaos that Max despised. She was a creature of habit. She felt best when she was in her usual routines. Change was hard, especially forced change. Loss of control took her back to the things she tried so hard to block out.

Max started the coffee. She knew Lou would be there soon. She wanted to have it ready.

Lou came waltzing into the shop at her usual time.

“Good morning, Glory!” Lou beamed, “I can’t wait any longer! Tell me what happened in court!”

One look at Max and Lou’s face fell. It contorted in anger as she hissed, “What did he get away with now?”

Strength was important to Max. Lou knew it. As Max explained how powerless she felt it caused the anger to grow in Lou.

Max’s eyes glazed over, “I wanted a divorce, Lou. I just wanted to be free to live my life as I wanted, but all he has done is stalk and harass me. I’m being pushed to desperate measures. I have thoughts about doing things; things I never imagined I was capable of.”

“I won’t let this go by,” Lou said through clenched teeth. “He has pushed his luck too far. It has all run out. I am going to make him pay.”

“Lou,” Max pleaded, “I don’t want you getting into this. This is my problem. I will solve it. I would never forgive myself if you got into trouble trying to help me. We can’t just break the law.”

Lou countered, “Who said anything about breaking the law? I am talking about a little creative problem-solving. I am an old woman. I was raised in a time when women just had to bite their tongues and tolerate the intolerable. I’m over it. I have a voice; a voice suppressed for too long. You were just supposed to turn a blind eye to all the crappy things men did, and that’s why they got away with it. I am going to do something about this.”

Max raised an eyebrow, “What do you have in mind?”

Lou leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper.
